The Jade Lion by Kenneth R. McClelland is the story of a man named Fallon and his pledge to kill the King of the Northern Province in an act of retribution. When he was young, several villagers, including his mother, had been killed when the King’s most treasured possession — a lion statue carved from solid jade — was thought to have been stolen by one of them. He escaped death by hiding under his mother’s body, and had heard the King’s realization that the Jade Lion was not stolen, but had been sent to a smith for polishing and had been forgotten about. Thus, years later when the King holds a Festival of Champions, Fallon makes it his mission to not only attend the tournament, but to win, devoting his free time to practicing archery and swordsmanship. He is paired with a young woman named Keera, who possesses incredible talent when it comes to shooting a bow and arrow, and has a razor sharp wit to match. However, there is more to Keera than there appears and only time will reveal all truths.
I absolutely loved this book! With vengeance, sword fights, and a smidgen of romance, this is a must-read for fans of fantasy or adventure. Although at first the story seemed a little predictable to me, it took an entirely different path than the one I had expected and left me happily surprised. McClelland is a wonderful writer; his words transport you to a whole other world of his own creation and will leave you wanting a sequel — I know I do! A wonderfully original story that I very much enjoyed reading.
