The Jack Creek Horror: A Novel by CJ Coombes is a great treat for fans of horror fiction, a narrative with powerful environmental themes and great potential for entertainment. Harold Sweeny owns the County Chronicle and when he invites his friend Cory Ballard for dinner, it’s because he has a job for Cory. He wants his friend to write some of that ridiculous, over the-top bullshit that sells papers to the dyslexic. He just doesn’t know what his friend is about to dig up. It is something terrifying — Deadstream Swamp — and who will dare face it?
The descriptive power of the prose and the masterful use of imagery pull the reader into the story and make them feel what CJ Coombes's characters experience. Right from the beginning of the story, we get acquainted with the crispness of the prose and the author’s unique phraseology and keen use of imagery: “He parted his eyelids with care; they felt as if sand-filled and scraped.” A solid, creepy page-turner, this novel is well written, hugely imaginative and focused. There are no distractions and the author’s handling of the setting is impeccable.
This isn’t a story about characters — although it has memorable, real, and likeable characters — but is a story about the environment, about the creek, and about the imbalance that robs nature of its beauty. The prose is exquisite and the vividness of the world the author creates is compelling. The Jack Creek Horror: A Novel is written in a way that forces the reader to keep on turning the pages, with timely paragraph breaks, short chapters, focused scenes and exciting dialogues. It’s an exciting romp you won’t want to miss; original and entertaining.
