The Intricate Art of Soap Making by Julia B. Daniels is a guide showing those interested in this craft how to make homemade soaps, what tools and equipment they need, how to start their own soap making business, as well as ten recipes to get them started. The book begins with a short foray into soap making history from Babylon, Egypt, and Romans to how the use of soaps diminished throughout the Middle Ages and re-emerged in the 19th century. The book closes with an “about the author” chapter where the reader learns the reason behind Daniels’ soap making journey: she started to develop an allergy to hygiene products therefore she needed to look for alternatives.
The book is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to make soaps at home, either for their own use or for starting their own business. The chapter dedicated to the business side of the craft is informative, guiding the reader through the essentials required by any business: developing a unique style, finding a narrow niche, the importance of having a logo and a website, as well as setting up a workstation and hours to dedicate to the business. The terminology specific to soap making hobby/business are also explained. Overall, this is an informative little guide designed to be consulted any time. I particularly enjoyed the chapter dedicated to the history of soap making as well as the recipes that I can't wait to try myself.
