A few years ago I was at a book fair in Bowling Green, KY. I repeatedly walked past the guest speaker, David Baldacci’s booth hoping to catch a glimpse of him and possibly to speak to him. Though I did finally get that glimpse I never did get to speak to him. The line at his booth, where he was graciously autographing his books, seemed to go on forever. Baldacci is a fabulous writer. I am not sure he has ever written anything that hasn’t thrilled readers. However, his latest book "The Innocent" surpasses all of his previous efforts. He has created characters that tugged at my heart strings and yet at times I wasn’t sure if they were truly trustable. The lead character in "The Innocent" is Will Robbie, an assassin for the US Government. Robbie is one of the best. When the government needs someone taken out they gives the assignment to Robbie. He is expected to complete his missions without question. However, his latest assignment did not make sense and for the first time he refused. The woman, holding her child, was killed by a long range sniper as Robbie watched. He knew he could be next.
Baldacci pairs Robbie with a fourteen year old girl on the run from killers. Robbie makes it his responsibility to help and protect the girl. Julie Getty and Robbie work perfectly together. She brings out his softer side. The review is on the audio format. The voices of Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy were perfection and brought the characters to life. My husband and I recently listened to this book while traveling. We found ourselves sitting in the car much longer than necessary. We always try to second guess the plot. I told him who I thought was the other assassin. I was right but that never took away from the excitement. This plot has several threads all seemingly unconnected but successfully woven together toward the end. As I listened, I thought the author had thrown in several red herrings but I was wrong as every minute clue came together to make "The Innocent" an entertaining read.
