Thomas Beckon has a rare and unique gift: he can take possession of another person's soul. It starts quite humbly when he's shocked to realize that he's inhabited his cat, but it doesn't take Tommy long to realize the power of this gift, referred to as "The Inlooker." Soon, he's using this gift to mete out quiet justice on those who have done him (and others) wrong, and to amass a personal fortune and start several businesses to secure his future, after losing his job.
As he continues to utilize his skills, he finds that humans aren't alone in the universe and, in fact, an entire secret alien life is taking place all around us, unbeknownst to most, but with significant consequences to all of humanity. When his gift as an Inlooker allows him to jump bodies into one of a powerful politician upon his death, it's just the beginning of his power and influence on the world. The Inlooker by Terry Tumbler is an intriguing, black humor look into our not-so-distant future, and the powers that could be surrounding us, if conspiracy theories hold true.
The Inlooker is a different kind of science fiction. It takes place in the near future, and opens up a dimension of life that most of us don't believe, or dismiss as urban fantasy. Terry Tumbler's black humor might take some getting used to, but it is a good read with an excellent moral on the privileges and pitfalls of power. As with all good sci-fi stories, it does an excellent job of asking the ultimate question of what it means to be human, and how to be the best person you can be. This is a book that will make you think in a good way. A great read.
