Sammy, a scientist, lived with his wife Dorotea, also a scientist, and their thirteen-year-old daughter Elika in a cozy blue house on top of a hill in the suburbs of Hartsdale, New York. Aunt Caroline was coming that Friday to join in Elika's birthday celebrations. Her aunt was friendly with a giant who lived in the Himalayan mountains in Nepal and Aunt Caroline went there very often. Elika also knew the story of how Aunt Caroline found the Amber Giant and woke him up from a thousand-year sleep. Elika had a collection of crystals and she added her new clear quartz crystal from Aunt Caroline. That night while lying in bed, Elika noticed her Fire and Ice crystal was glowing, and she had the weirdest dream. She could also hear a voice moaning. Things take a different turn when they all go to Iceland and she hears the moans clearly. Aunt Caroline and Elika drove into the mountains, following the voice, and there they saw an Ice Giant!
The Ice Giant by Giulietta M. Spudich is a fantastical and magical story which will make young readers curious to learn more about the Ice Giant. There is a sense of urgency in the plot when Elika hears the voice and tries to find out the source, and that keeps readers guessing till she finds out whose voice it is. The Ice Giant and the Amber Giant add to the fantasy and whimsical elements in the plot. The narration is descriptive and detailed and gives readers vivid images of the characters and the scenes. The story has adventure, magic, and action, and children will definitely enjoy reading about Elika, Aunt Caroline, the Ice Giant, and the Amber Giant.
