The Hierophant’s Daughter is a work of dark science fiction penned by author M. F. Sullivan, and forms the first book in the Disgraced Martyr Trilogy. Written for adults, this is a politically charged futuristic novel with a cyberpunk twist. In the time of the Hierophant, 4042 CE, an army of genetically modified humans, called martyrs, keeps the dwindling populace of mankind under control as the Church reigns supreme. But the Hierophant’s daughter, Dominia, has plans of her own: a personal quest to resurrect the dead. Help comes in strange forms and by whispered prophecies, and the Hierophant’s daughter must navigate it all to get what she wants and break free from her father’s supreme control.
General Dominia is a powerful centerpiece to a thrilling, horrific and tense adventure where the fate of humanity is at stake. The novel is constructed in equal parts of character-led action and conceptual plot-driven moments, giving readers a chance to examine the implications of the wider political sphere alongside Dominia’s own personal quest for solace and redemption. Author M. F. Sullivan writes well in the tense moments and has clearly developed a solid sense of the world and the new trials which humanity faces beneath the Hierophant’s iron fist. The cyberpunk elements are well crafted, with the martyrs having interesting abilities that set them apart from humans, and the scenes of violence were quite shocking but also well placed to amp up the action. Fans of futuristic horror and cogent dystopias are certain to enjoy The Hierophant’s Daughter as much as I did.
