The HBE Way is about the implications of working from home, for both the employer and the employee. Phillip Dolan uses the 2013 decision by Yahoo in which it recalled all its work-from-home employees back to the office. Yahoo cited that working from the office, side by side, enhances communication and collaboration and how hallway and cafeteria discussions have been known to result in great ideas. This decision was supported by many and equally opposed by others. Phillip Dolan focuses on the financial implication of having more employees work from home. Focusing on the quantifiable benefits of working from home, he shows how having some staff work from home will save the company money in terms of real estate expenses and bring on board additional work hours since no time will be wasted driving to and from work. He also shows other benefits like less fuel consumption, which is good for the environment. On the other side, he looks at the benefits to the employee, like more personal time and big savings.
Phillip Dolan focuses on the quantifiable benefits of working from home, to both employer and employee and in the end shows that it might not be the worst idea for companies to have more and more of their employees working from home. Using theories like 'time is money,' he shows that companies stand to save a lot by having their employees working from home and instead utilizing modern communication and monitoring tools to make up the lost face-to-face time and monitor productivity. The HBE Way also gives useful tips to the employee on how to make the most out of working from home.
