Larry is a first generation American. His mother was born in what was the old Yugoslavia. He is a U.S. Navy veteran of eight years. For him it all started in his childhood when he collected pop bottles from the alleyways of his hometown. They were like gold. He got two cents per bottle. With five bottles he could buy a 10 cent comic book. By the time he was in eighth grade he was reading at the twelfth grade level and had already developed a love for Sci-fi and Fantasy. His passion for Science and Horror came a couple years later. He was an Air Traffic Controller until the strike of 1981. After losing his job he transitioned to the nuclear industry and loved every minute of it. He took an early retirement after twenty-five years and has returned to his love: Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Horror. He is writing to entertain others as he was entertained when he was younger. His first two books, The Great Angel War and The One Path are the first two books in a trilogy called The God Chronicles. He is completing the final edit of a Sci-fi book called The Raygin War. The Great Angel War by Larry Gerovac is a broadly imagined telling of what happened in the heavens before mankind was created. In the book we hear the story as it is being told by an angel named Raphael to the last prophet, a man from modern times named Thomas. The book starts and ends with Thomas’s tale as he begins his journey to warn mankind that the end times are drawing near. The majority of the book focuses on the drama among the angels as Lucifer, God’s number one angel, becomes arrogant and leads a third of the angels in an attempt to overthrow God’s throne.
The Great Angel War is book one in a series called The God Chronicles. As such, it seems to have had two big stories to tell that will lay the groundwork for the books to come. First, it had to introduce us to the central character, Thomas the Last Prophet, and kick off his narrative. Second, it had an epic back story to tell involving many angel characters. By the end of the book I found that I was enjoying both stories and was sad to see them end. However, for about the first half of the book I had difficulty getting into the story of the angels. There wasn’t enough character development at first and I found it difficult to care about the characters. But, I stuck with it and was glad I did. As the story goes on, some of the angel characters are given enough page time to become familiar and I found it easier to identify with them.
By the time I got to the war in the last fourth of the book, I found myself hooked and cheering for the good angels to win and put Lucifer and his minions in their place. The war scenes are phenomenal and rival any of the wars in books by Tolkien or Lewis. The other story, about Thomas, was easy to enjoy from beginning to end. I’m looking forward to book 2 that will hopefully focus more on the present day story of Thomas while also including some of the angels that are introduced to us in book 1.
