The Grate Adventure of Lester Zester by Mark Dentzler is a storybook for children about a microplane zester grater used to grate the zest from lemons, other citrus fruit, chocolate, and more. Someone bought Lester Zester as a Christmas gift for the house's chef, but Lester Zester felt intimidated by all the impressive and useful utensils in the kitchen. Lester Zester yearns to be helpful to the chef, and early on in his new home, he learns about the Everyday Drawer and the Gadget Box. The Everyday Drawer is where he wants to live and remain, and the Gadget Box is where utensils go that the chef rarely uses. Lester Zester encounters some friendly and not-so-friendly utensils, making him second-guess his value and purpose to the chef. Lester Zester continues his self-discovery journey until he understands his role in the kitchen and his importance to the chef.
The Grate Adventure of Lester Zester by Mark Dentzler is a delightful, heartwarming, and imaginative storybook for children that educates and inspires. Dentzler tells an inspirational story about finding your purpose and believing in yourself while incorporating extensive and elaborate vocabulary focused on the kitchen area that will keep children engaged and challenged. I enjoyed reading this book because of the critical message for children and adults - never underestimate your abilities. Each person is special and brings unique qualities to the table. The message that stood out for me was that it's okay to be different. Everyone has a purpose. You must believe in yourself.
