The Good Fight by Ophelia Hu is set between the present and the future. We are brought into a town that is bisected by a contaminated river. The people of this town have no faith in the future and honestly can't remember a past that is not full of war. Sam, who is an illiterate prize fighter, lives here with his brother Rig, a veteran, and his sister-in-law, Camila. When Rig confesses a secret to Camilla, they agree that not even Sam can know about it, even though they both love him deeply. While this goes on, peace unravels and the townspeople begin to get restless and blame each other.
This is a book full of love, loss, absence and what happens when war affects our lives so heavily. There are themes that resonate with today's society in many ways. The tone of this book reads in an interesting, flowing manner, almost lyrical, as if it could be a song, and so vivid you can truly see the world that is being created before you. The characters are all interesting and intense and have a colorful way about them. Their interactions are interesting and I feel somewhat weighted by the secret that has been kept. I enjoyed this book and found a solid mix in emotions. I applaud the work that Ophelia Hu has done here. If you enjoy this genre and want a good solid story with characters who seem very real, I would recommend you read this book.
