Greenwood School is having an art contest. The students are all excited and do their best to win the contest. Benjamin and Lenny are the top contenders, and both greatly want to win. Author Sandy Jarvis sets the scene in The Golden Kite. The two contenders are assisted by Stanley and Albert. Sandy creatively uses different animals for each of the characters. Lenny normally wins all the contests. This time would be different. However, no one in the class can even imagine how different this contest would be. Perseverance is taught by Benjamin’s determination in the face of great odds. Humility and forgiveness are taught by Lenny after the disaster. “What disaster?” you may ask. In an attempt to uncover cheating, Benjamin does the unforgivable. But, with kindness and compassion, Lenny reaches out to Benjamin. Read this great little book to find out who actually wins the contest.
Cheating should never be considered an option. Lying is never the best solution. Forgiveness should always be given. These are just some of the truisms found in The Golden Kite. The desire to win can be overwhelming and cause proper thinking to disappear. Even after being told that any cheating would not only disqualify the students from winning the contest, however, Benjamin thinks the best course of action is to lie. Sandy Jarvis sets the stage in this book to show improper behavior and ends with showing compassion and forgiveness. This is an excellent book for teaching values to children. Read this book with your child and then discuss what options each of the characters had. Explain why it is important to make the right choices.
