The Girl From Huizen is a historical fiction drama novel by Paulette Mahurin. Set in Nazi-occupied Netherlands in the 1940s, the story follows Rosamond Jansen (Roz), a young woman living on a farm in the small village of Huizen. Roz and her family feel disillusioned by the deportation of Jews and the strict totalitarian control of the Nazi regime. Roz's father, Adrian, soon joins the underground resistance, helping Jewish people escape the clutches of the dreaded SS. But it costs him his life and instills a deep-seated hatred for the Nazis in Roz. After she meets her uncle's friend, Karl, Roz takes on her father's mantle, helping Jewish children with an enigmatic woman named Madelief. Soon, they develop a burgeoning friendship. But can Roz continue to help Jewish families at the risk of imprisonment or worse?

Inspired by the life of real-life hero Marion Pritchard, The Girl From Huizen sheds light on the sacrifices and tremendous courage shown by the members of the Dutch Resistance during World War II. Heartbreaking yet cautiously hopeful, this is a story for historical fiction aficionados. Paulette Mahurin's novel perfectly demonstrates humanity's ability to rise up and do good amidst adversity against seemingly overwhelming odds. Roz is someone you can relate to. She channels her anger and loss into working toward undermining the Nazi regime from the inside out and saves many innocent lives in the process. I really enjoyed her relationships with Karl and Madelief. All in all, this is an inspirational story that focuses on the lives of the heroes of the Dutch Resistance. Highly recommended.
