In the small town of Bloomtown, teenager Anna, the daughter of a paranormal investigator, is deemed weird by her peers at school. She is teased, bullied and nicknamed Goblin Girl. Her ability to make contact with spirits and trickers is something that causes her distress, especially as she is still trying to come to terms with the death of her mother 8 years ago. Anna's two friends are her only means of support in the world, as her father is preoccupied with his work and slowly disappearing behind the hoards of objects he collects. When the behavior of some of the residents turns ugly, many blame the imminent solar storms heading towards the town but Anna suspects a more sinister reason. Could the same demonic spirit that caused her mother's death be responsible? Anna is determined to discover the truth while at the same time resolving painful memories and finding clarity in her life.
The Ghost Hunter's Daughter by Caroline Flarity is a dark and spine-chilling story with a fantastic descriptive narrative which had me hooked from the outset. The plot contains plenty of suspense and tension-filled moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters are interesting and their personalities are multi-layered. The main plot involving Anna and her battle against tricksters, spirits, and demons, is supported really well with sub-plots concerning dysfunctional family dynamics, bullying and overcoming the death of a loved one. There are some comical moments too, especially with Geneva, the father's assistant. I loved her personality. The relationship between Anna and her father's tortured soul, as they try to deal with the mother's suicide has some really tender moments. I thought the exploration into the after-effects of bereavement was dealt with sympathetically as were the emotions of a teenager being bullied for being deemed as 'different'. The climatic ending as they try to thwart the dark energy causing mayhem in the town was superb. The references to quantum physics and different dimensions also gave a great deal of realism to the plot. A great story all around.
