The Gang of Three: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle by Neel Burton should be required reading for any college class in philosophy. This is the best book on philosophy I have ever read, and I have four master’s degrees. Neel gives a fantastic overview of the pre-Socratic philosophies and "the gang of three." Critical thinking seeking “truth” is the root of the Socratic method. Philosophers are basically lovers of wisdom. You may have heard of some of the philosophers Neel discusses, but there are probably some you have never heard of. The works of the philosophers are discussed, and a commentary is given. Neel gives information about the life and times of the various philosophers and shows any connections between them. Some names mentioned include Pythagoras, Xenophanes, Zeno, Euripides, and many others. When reading this book, be ready to learn.
Neel Burton gives a masterful study of philosophy in The Gang of Three: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle. Neel will keep the reader interested by providing just the right amount of details. He explains the philosophical writings in layman’s terms so all can understand. He also gives the history of the Greek world that influenced and, in turn, was influenced by these men, their predecessors, and their descendants. Neel is a psychiatrist who delves into other areas of study. He understands people, making his books appealing to the inner human. If you are afraid you will be overwhelmed by philosophy, your fears will quickly be put to rest. Neel explains even the meanings of names to help the reader understand the connections between who wrote what. Who doesn’t want wisdom? We all want and need wisdom, and this book will introduce readers to the methods of gaining and using wisdom.
