Toby’s obsession with trying to see into the heavens leads him to his next adventure in The Further Adventures of Toby the Trilby by Angela Castillo. A bright flash falling into the forest catches Toby’s attention and the voice of Father God tells him to follow the light. With sincere dedication to the word of God, Toby leaves the Grambles to find the source of the light in the forest and encounters the gang of kids responsible for hurting him in the first story. They are in danger from the Moddies, adults who are also searching for the fallen object, and Dread falls victim to their violence. Left behind to die, Dread is nursed by Toby who knows this is the Father’s way – forgiveness and aid to those who need it. Toby is able to escape the gang and continue on his quest where he discovers the fallen item and an even bigger secret. Can Toby keep his home a secret and the new visitors safe while following the will of his Father?
The characteristics of faith, hope and love are clearly demonstrated in The Further Adventures of Toby the Trilby by Angela Castillo. With tremendous creativity and deep understanding, Castillo draws young (and older!) readers into a fantasy tale that invites further thought and discussion as Toby lives his faith in spite of difficult conditions and circumstances. While some action may be a bit intense for the youngest readers, the book is perfect for reading aloud by an adult with the opportunity for explanation and instruction. The Toby the Trilby Series is wonderfully written with Book 2 offering the same if not more excitement and teachable moments as the first volume.
