The Forge of Bonds by Wendy Terrien is Chronicle Three in The Adventures of Jason Lex. After embarking on separate harrowing adventures, Jason and Sadie are back in the same town with each still recovering from their recent losses and betrayals. Jason continues to struggle with what took place in London and attempts to return life to normal by training with his uncle. As Sadie grieves the loss of Mamo, she struggles to get a handle on her abilities. When a Bigfoot is seen around town, the memories of Miranda’s attack reopen for Sadie and, with the reality that her worst enemy may have returned, the decision of how to deal with it puts a rift between her and Jason. As relationships are tested, Sadie will make startling discoveries about her own past while Jason uncovers a secret that someone close to him is keeping.
The Forge of Bonds picks up after the events that occurred during chronicle two in the series, which saw Sadie and Jason on separate journeys. The events from each of their pasts are at the root of their emotional struggles and the trauma that haunts them. Sadie’s struggling after the loss of her Mamo and continues to process through the trauma she experienced at the hands of Miranda while Jason is confronting his own demons which are rooted in his mom’s betrayal. They’re both haunted by these betrayals and attacks they survived so, in chronicle three, they’re trying to process how to move forward with their lives and to get back to some normalcy. These attempts are quickly thwarted when the arrival of a past enemy threatens to shatter their friendship and their trust in each other.
The story weaves between their two perspectives which allow you to see their emotional struggles as they deal with their trauma, their abilities, their destinies, and their relationships. Sadie has a decision to make when Nessa uncovers a secret everyone around her has been keeping, which places an obstacle in the connection the three girls have. Wendy Terrien delivers a dazzling third chronicle in the series as The Forge of Bonds delves into the bonds of family and friendship with tension, betrayal, and secrets while also exploring the lingering reality of trauma and shocking twists that you won’t see coming.
