The Fleeing Company is the first book in The Drifters' Road series by Kyle McCurry and a great mix of science fiction and epic fantasy. The protagonist is called Adroegen, a man who must protect his friends from a merciless and powerful enemy, the goblin chief who is out to kill them. The night is dangerous for them for it is the time the goblins hunt. They are blinded by the light of day, so Adroegen and his friends must use the day to travel further away from the pack. But Adroegen has problems of his own: he struggles with thoughts of revenge, knowing that the goblin chief was behind the murder of his family.
Kyle McCurry's work reminded me so strongly of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Thorin's experience with the orcs, but while there are similar elements in this novel, the author weaves a tale that is original and creates a compelling protagonist in Adroegen. He is a man thirsty for revenge but he must lead his friends who are now his new family to safety. The world-building is impeccably written, the writing is lyrical and filled with strong imagery, and the tale is never lacking in the adventure that entices fans of fantasy. McCurry’s portrayal of the life of the night creatures is brilliant. The characters are rock-solid and sophisticated, from Adroegen to Caitren, Edelbir, Kattalin and the others. Readers encounter characters who are people without a family and who become bonded through adversity, and at the end, they are a family they never had. The Fleeing Company is packed with action and suspense, a pulsating story that had me racing through each page.
