Self-awareness is a multi-dimensional journey to understanding oneself. It is also a continuous journey where we introspect and grow into better versions of ourselves. In The Five Dimensions of Self-Awareness, Laura Clementz breaks down the concept of self-awareness. Mind chatter, healthy boundaries, unconditional love, self-exploration, and immersion in the present – these are the five dimensions explained by Laura. Drawing from different psychological and cognitive concepts, Laura puts together a simple and usable guided framework. The five dimensions are fueled by theories and concepts from different schools of thought across the world. As each dimension is explored, stories and vignettes are used to illustrate the concept in everyday life situations. The discussion segment that follows gives ample opportunity for reflection and deeper understanding.
There is no such thing as too much self-awareness. The more we practice, the better we become at it. Laura Clementz gives a ready framework to understand the basics of self-awareness. The Five Dimensions of Self-Awareness is a quick and handy guide to start and continue the self-awareness journey. The structure of the narration helped me follow the concepts well. As each dimension is explored, the related story and following discussion points facilitate reflection. Although I was aware of the underlying psychological concepts and theories, Laura’s treatment of the five dimensions gave me a fresh perspective. The stories covered multiple scenarios and relationships – parent/child, friends, husband/wife, colleagues. It is possible to find something relatable for almost every reader. I am happy that as I read the book, I progressed a few steps in my own self-awareness journey.
