The Fitzgeralds of Dublin series box set by Lorna Peel is comprised of the first three books of this historical family saga, taking place in Dublin in the 1880s. The protagonists, Will Fitzgerald and Isobel Stevens, meet in the first book, A Scarlet Woman. Isobel, after being ejected from her family home, finds herself working in a brothel. It’s there she meets Will, a young doctor on his best friend’s stag night. As their friendship develops, Will and Isobel find their budding attraction too difficult to ignore, and Isobel realizes she needs to be free of this disreputable lifestyle. From there, the series progresses, with the family changing and growing, new trials and tribulations put in their way, and the forming of happier memories.
I normally don’t read box sets, but I was intrigued by the idea of a family saga set in this time period. I knew there were a lot of changes going on in Ireland at the time, so The Fitzgeralds of Dublin series by Lorna Peel was something I thought would be worth a shot. I was pleased by the flow of the story, and how each book moved into the next seamlessly. I don’t want to give too much away as it would reveal spoilers for books two and three, but this is definitely worth the read for fans of historical family sagas who enjoy a touch of romance as well. I would recommend starting with the first novel, as these cannot be read as standalone books. While I admired Isobel’s fire, my favorite character thus far is actually Will. I’m very much looking forward to reading the fourth book in the saga.
