The Fish King and the Two Wise Ghosts by Francis H Powell offers young readers a whimsical visit to a magical fishy kingdom ruled by a kind king from his colorful Fish and Clam Palace. As the tides and the years roll by, readers will experience the king’s search for a queen, some fabulous fishy parties in the palace, and young Prince Eric’s coming of age and subsequent departure to see the world. Two friendly ghosts, Henry and John, give the king sage advice from the first page to the last. The Fish King and the Two Wise Ghosts is sprinkled with an extended series of rhyming couplets, which gives the narrative a fairytale feel that will appeal to children and adults alike. Francis H Powell has crafted a modern-day fable that reflects the positive values of friendship, trust, loyalty, honesty, and responsibility, to name a few. Any child would do well to have such fine friends as this beguiling fishy lot.
Francis H. Powell is also the illustrator of this marvelous tale. The illustrations are colorful and imaginative and miraculously reflect the ebb and flow of the Fish King’s watery world with their squiggly lines and bold palette. The Fish King’s close-knit family values are reflected in the captivating illustrations and the real-life fact that the author’s son created the drawing, which inspired the tale. This family-stick-together approach will make readers feel as if they are part of something special, which, indeed, they are.
