After centuries of peace between the Grimmox and Haloti, a Grimmox is said to have been spotted in Haloti territory, breaking a long-standing treaty between the two races. Espionage and a future attack are suspected, so the Haloti elders propose building an army and mounting an attack on the Grimmox, those bloodthirsty savages, before it is too late. Thula suspects that something doesn’t quite add up. A Grimmox is rumored to have wandered into their territory but no one can corroborate the story, and the elders seem all too eager to mobilize an army and bring destruction to a race based on mere hearsay. Something’s afoot and she devises a plan to get to the heart of it. She joins the army, hoping to find out from the inside what is really going on. The Final Offering by J.G. Gatewood is about this and so much more.
Embroiled in the enrapturing, suspenseful story of The Final Offering are the important themes of race, greed, power and misinformation. And in Thula we have a perfect model of how structures of power, authority and information itself should be approached; with healthy criticism, independent thought and resourcefulness. This is why Thula is such a likable character; she is who we wish we could be in the face of power gone mad. She is just as imperfect and powerless as we sometimes feel but she doesn’t let it decide for her. From the first page we are thrust into this very warmhearted, intriguing universe of beautiful people with their own culture, traditions and narratives that never cease to delight and satisfy our thirst for novelty. J.G. Gatewood’s The Final Offering is thrilling, absorbing and heartwarming. Taking this journey with Thula and seeing where it leads is one of the most satisfying moments in literature I have ever encountered; goose bumps, tension and sweet release. Beautiful work!
