The Fifth Prophet is a work of fiction in the historical, coming of age, and thriller sub-genres, and was penned by author Lauren Lee Merewether. The work is intended for the mature reading audience and contains scenes which some reader may find upsetting, including reference to animal cruelty and domestic abuse, as pertaining to the historical context. As the fourth novel in The Lost Pharaoh Chronicles Prequel Collection, we find ourselves once again immersed in Merewether’s incredible Egyptian world of dark intrigue. Our protagonist this time is Pawah, a young man with power and glory on his mind, who finds himself able to subvert the sympathy and discrimination he faces to feed his own greed.
Author Lauren Lee Merewether has crafted a highly immersive and character-driven work of fiction with plenty of dark dramatic twists to offer its readers. One of the features which I found particularly impressive about this piece was its ability to allow readers to follow the rise of a villain with such close emotion, investment, and even sympathy for this devilish character. I for one was captivated by Pawah’s charm and intrigued by the ways he wove himself into a new society. As always with this collection of works, the worldbuilding was superb and included fine details of culture and daily life, whilst also painting the gorgeous, atmospheric backdrop of ancient Egypt preparing to face some of its truly darkest days. Overall, I would highly recommend The Fifth Prophet to fans of historical thrillers, emotive and dark origin stories, and for Egyptophiles everywhere.
