Look out, Hardy Boys! Move over, Nancy Drew. There’s a new generation of young sleuths in town and they happen to be ghost busters on top of being great detectives. Welcome to the world of The Fantastic Phantasmic Detective Agency by D.L. Dugger. It’s The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew meet Harry Potter. I love this book. It took me back to my early days of reading, where I would spend hours nestled in a quiet spot in my house, reading about kids like me solving mysteries and having fun. This is a great idea. It takes the idea of young detectives in a whole new direction; the supernatural. I can’t think of many stories that would grip young readers more than helping good ghosts solve their problems. I’m not sure if this will be a series, but if it is, it should go far.
Billy, Abby, and Toby are twelve-year-olds. The perfect age for this kind of adventure. D.L. Dugger writes these characters perfectly, each with his or her own personality that contributes to the story and to their unique ways of solving mysteries. D.L. Dugger creates a supernatural world that is interesting and fun, while not being too complicated or scary for young readers. The kids are having fun. They are doing good and helping to right wrongs. They are brave, but with the common sense and practical side that allows them to solve each case. Rich in detail and full of scenes where the young detectives ask the right questions and do the right thing, The Fantastic Phantasmic Detective Agency is poised to be reading inspiration to a new generation of young readers.
