The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva is an espionage thriller that revolves around Gabriel Allon, a former Israeli intelligence agent, who is now working in the Vatican, restoring a priceless masterpiece. The butterfly effect in full bloom, one small but tragic event leads to the saving of the world. A tragic death at the Basilica ropes Gabriel into an international art theft ring, and a terrorists’ plot, embroiling the Middle East in more strife. Allon wants to finish restoring the commissioned work, spend time with his wife, and enjoy life but his past catches up with him. Can Allon and his Israeli colleagues find the art thieves and prevent the Middle East from erupting into open warfare?

Daniel Silva has woven an intricate plot that unravels under Allon’s skillful probing. Daniel Silva has written more than a spy novel. He weaves art, history, differing religions, and current events into multiple plots that are entertaining, and creates an informative tale of personal loss and growth with a masterful hand. He has written a novel that understands the background and reality of the strife in the Middle East and the realization that it probably will not be settled any time soon. I enjoyed this tale of intrigue. I was not overloaded with an intensive history lesson, but shown more of an overview and acceptance of the reality of today's dynamics worldwide. In addition, the history was so skilfully interwoven into the story of one small group of people.
