The Fall and the Impact is a short story by Ben Walker. Written from the viewpoint of a bomb in World War II (known as Little Boy), this tale tells of Little Boy’s recurring dream – one which brings such thrill and delight to Little Boy each and every time. The dream gives Little Boy visions of an endless fall as the breeze rushes by. Finally the day arrives when Little Boy is strapped to the underside of a plane. Excitement turns to shock and confusion when, upon release, Little Boy sees the ground approach quickly. It finally dawns on Little Boy that there will be an impact, destroying all where it lands – including Little Boy.
Although the subject matter was quite horrifying, especially as it is being read at a time where these incidents are now commonplace, the way in which The Fall and the Impact is written is so profound and unique. Ben Walker’s tale caused my mind to see the world through the eyes of a bomb – something I can quite honestly say nobody has ever been able to accomplish before. The bomb is presented as an innocent party – it has no personal intention to harm or destroy - but the misdeeds of its use are planned by those who are anything but innocent, knowing full well the death and destruction it will bring. The Fall and the Impact is so well written that I viewed every single thought and action as it took place, with the cinematic effect bringing a tear to my eye at the precise moment that the bomb realized that it had been created for the sole purpose of bringing death and pain to others. I am impressed by Ben Walker’s insightful creative writing skills and recommend The Fall and the Impact to be read by those over 18 years of age who are not faint of heart.
