Written by Andy Garner, The End of the Line is an anthology of short stories and a couple of poems. The stories are diverse, ranging from tragedy to humor, even children’s tales. The book includes a number of award winning pieces, including the prize winning story The End of the Line.
“Tease” is the first story of the collection. It is about rowdy schoolboys and the mischief that they often get themselves into. It focuses on one boy, Timothy Thomas Taylor aka Tease. Often regarded as worthless by most students and teachers, he does something unexpected in the end. Quite frankly, it is a fairly decent story, I wasn't put off or amazed by it. And it was the same for most of the stories. Surprisingly, I was more interested in the poetry –- “Earth, fire, water and air” and “Spring”. They are the best poetry I have read so far, with powerful choices of words and filled with regret and sadness about them. Extraordinarily profound with a touch of metaphors.
On the whole, I'd say that I liked this anthology but did not love it. There were at least three stories which I just could not get into. This anthology has some wonderful stories and some weaker ones. It is expected because like any other readers, I would have my own personal picks. No one has the same taste as I do, nor would I expect them to. Nonetheless, Andy Garner’s The End of the Line is still a satisfying read.
