The Emma Effect is a romance drama novel by Gordon Bocher. Raised by his great-grandmother after his parents' death, Mitch Lavin grows up to be the perfect student, getting a scholarship to Windmark College at the age of seventeen. Despite playing as a central midfielder for the school's varsity soccer team, Mitch's time at college was far from memorable. He had to break up with his fiancee, Marina, because of a traumatic experience. He drops out of college, only to be approached by former General Creighton Wheeler, who offers him a job at MCI, a rare earth mining corporation that operates all over the world, working on behalf of the nation's defense. While Mitch travels the world as a mining expert, he falls in love with General Wheeler's administrative assistant, Emma Waterson, who changes the course of his life.
The Emma Effect is about how traumatic experiences can sometimes prevent a person from following their heart, only for someone special to arrive and change their lives. The story is a slow burn as author Gordon Bocher is primarily focused on pausing over the momentous events in the protagonist's life. Mitch and Emma's love story is at the heart of the story. There is a noticeable difference in how Mitch changes as a person after meeting and falling in love with Emma. Eventually, he learns to forgive and let go of the past. I had a good time reading Mitch's tale, and if you like slice-of-life romances, The Emma Effect is something you will probably enjoy.
