The Dream Walker is the first book in the Land of Mystica Series by Michelle Murray, an epic fantasy with a strong appeal for young readers. While the plot might look simple, it is ingeniously done and displays a lot of imagination. Legend tells of the existence of six wizards trapped in stones because of a malicious spell that went awry. That was a long time ago. But now, a young boy unwittingly releases one of the bad wizards, Midnight, who is set on conquering Mystica as he gathers an army. The fate of this magical world is in the hands of a young girl, Miranda, who must travel the uncharted and unfriendly landscapes of Mystica to find Lightning. Can she overcome the obstacles and find the only wizard who can defeat Midnight and in time?
The setting is an imaginary universe and an imaginary time, but it is a land that is exciting to explore. The author creates a world of magic that is full of memorable places like the Ice Caves, the Forest of the Lost, the Dragon's Lair and the Plains. The young reader can easily imagine this world and the creatures that prowl through it. The prose is good. The characters are exceptional and the developmental arc is clearly noticeable through the narrative. The female protagonist is a character who caught my attention right from the start and I wanted to find out how things turned out for her. The Dream Walker is a gripping story filled with adventure. I loved the characters and the enchanting world.
