In "The Dragon Gem" by Brian Beam Korinalis Karell, also known as Korin, is the leading character and the narrator. Korin has long been overwhelmed by dreams of being taken from his birth parents as a mere baby. He has spent many years searching for them, encouraged by Max, a talking, green-eyed cat wizard. Our book opens with a card game that quickly turns into a brawl. Galius hired Korin to retrieve a stolen gem. While Korin managed to retrieve the gem during the brawl, it was quickly stolen from him by a figure dressed in a black cape. There was only two weeks to return the gem to Galius or forfeit his soul. A hodge podge of evil characters pursue Korin although he has no idea why. He must discover the origins of his existence to survive. So begins the adventures of Korinalis Karell.
"The Dragon Gem" is a combination of action/adventure, fantasy, romance and humor. Brian Beam offers readers a fast-paced high action adventure. More than once Korin survives only because Max heals him. Korin is a very likable character. I loved Max, the green-eyed, talking cat capable of healing. Max adds a lot of mystery and humor to the story. Add the dragon and other creatures chasing Korin, and you have quite a varied cast. I was quickly pulled into the plot of this fantasy. I liked the characters immensely and soon found I cared about what happened to them. The ending needs a bit of work but over all, this is a great read.
