The Dogs of War by Alvin Yusin is a work of historical fiction that centers around the political ambitions of an American family during the World War II era. Elizabeth, an ambitious matriarch, schemes from the birth of her son Andrew to position him on a path to the Presidency, and to manipulate her daughters Edwina and Laura into suitable marriages. However, Andrew has no interest in politics. It will be Edwina’s husband David who becomes the presidential hopeful, but he’ll face the “dogs” of a subtle “war” through treachery from within his own family. Will his bid for the presidency succeed? Laura’s sons Robert and Michael will face the brutal and bloodthirsty “dogs” of a world at war on the battlefields of Normandy. Will they survive the conflict?
In The Dogs of War, Alvin Yusin gives us a dramatic tale that is epic in tone and tapestried in theme. The well-paced narrative is written in an elevated style. Highly descriptive and emotionally evocative, with exceptional character development, it reaches almost poetic grandeur in places while addressing the fundamental issues of human nature, the meaning of faith and religion, the nature of hate and evil, and immorality of war. “Satan’s attributes exist,” one character observes, “not in Satan... in every human heart.” Juxtaposed against these themes is that of the drive for power and the corruption of politics and the press in our society, and how easily even a well-educated electorate can be manipulated through what we today term “fake news.” An insightful and thought-provoking read.
