Oh, for those lazy, hazy days of summer. It’s a time to sit around and enjoy the warmth, or a time to play outside and enjoy all that the warm days can offer. Ernie knows about enjoying himself. He is a dog after all and dogs know how to have fun and make the most of every waking moment. From the moment he gets up in the morning, he is busy: eating, drinking, running around, swimming in the pool. There is so much to enjoy, especially on a warm, sunny day and Ernie knows best how to enjoy himself.
Deanna Asbury’s picture book story, The Dog Days of Ernie, is a delightful little romp. With colorful illustrations, this simple but enjoyable story is told mostly in rhyming verse. A young reader is introduced to Ernie and learns what is important to a dog: how to have fun while still taking care of the essentials like eating, drinking and staying cool on a hot summer day. It also teaches young readers the importance of keeping life simple and enjoying active living instead of staying indoors with technology for entertainment.
There is so much a child, as well as a dog, can do outside and Ernie teaches young readers many ways to have some fun. Ernie appears to have a vivid imagination. As he dives into the small wading pool, he suddenly finds himself searching for deep sea treasures: “He swam underwater in his scuba gear and searched for secret treasure far and near.” Surprisingly enough, Ernie’s idea of a great treasure is a hidden dog bone. Overall, a fun story for a very young reader.
