The Diamonds is the seventh book in the Jax Diamond Mysteries by Gail Meath. We meet Jax, the potential bridegroom; Tim, his friend in the police force; Laura, the potential bride; Ace, the extremely clever Alsatian; and a variety of their friends and relatives. Only a few days before the wedding, Jax and Tim take off after a dangerous criminal they have previously encountered, one who has just escaped from prison. Events escalate when the same gang members kidnap Laura and Carla, Tim’s wife, in the bridal gown shop, while their better halves are on a wild goose chase after the jewel thieves. Federal agents become involved, and, while locked in a cellar the women discover a body. With only a couple of days left before the wedding, it looks as if the nuptials may not take place after all.
A light, cozy mystery, The Diamonds by Gail Meath is an easy read. This is a standalone book, except for brief references to earlier adventures. The characters are well-drawn, the story is realistic, and the plot keeps up the pace from the first page. I liked the natural conversations and neither of the characters, especially the women, were prone to hysterics or histrionics. Meath has us turning the pages as the story moves forward satisfactorily. I liked how Laura left unique clues along the route for the rescuers, and I loved the interesting, well-done pictures at the beginning of each chapter. If you are looking for a beach read, or a book to choose to curl up with in front of the fire, I recommend this one. It was a delightful read.
