Fans of science fiction with a focus on the human side of the equation rather than on glistening technology and special effects, and who enjoy doses of suspense, danger, mystery, mind games, multiple dimensions, and even a bit of romance and philosophy along the way, will find The Dial, Part I: A Collection of Science Fiction Short Stories by Rory W. Warwick a highly entertaining and imaginative read. Through ten stories with different settings, plots, and themes, Warwick gives us a “a provocative look at the future of humanity, and the dangerous paths we might take.” His focus is on the resilience of the human spirit, but resilience doesn’t always mean survival. It’s a dangerous world out there, after all. One never knows if what one is experiencing is even real, or the result of an implant.
I enjoyed reading The Dial. It reminded me of science fiction serials I watched on black and white television as an enthralled youngster. As I read Warwick’s stories, I had the same reaction. My heartbeat increased when I sensed that danger lurked. I wanted to warn the protagonist, “Don’t open that box!” or “Don’t trust that robot!” or “She’s not really your wife!” His writing style is straightforward and crisp, and the stories leave you sometimes scared, sometimes disappointed, sometimes relieved, but always emotionally engaged. You can readily believe that people might experience such unbelievable adventures and, in some cases, such terror. Warning: if you get something in the mail that doesn’t look like the device you ordered and it has a button on it, whatever you do, don’t push that button!
