The Devil's Dragon: Book 1 of the Dragon Trilogy by Jason Boggs begins with the chief protagonist, a young cadet named Nelson, participating in a war exercise in the year 2094. Concealing himself, he attempts to successfully complete a harrowing dangerous course by making his way past many guards into a military establishment. Nelson almost dies in the process but fails. His family stands by him to sponsor another year's training costs. He finally qualifies and becomes a soldier through a thrilling series of nail-biting events. The scene shifts to an alien planet known as Aescalon. Chief Naid Youngblood, the head of one of the oldest tribes of the Aesini people called the Keerof, addresses his council at a banquet, laying out the details of the forthcoming ceremonial journey to Aescalon City, to present tributes to the king. Naid's recalcitrant impetuous daughter Alene enters into a heated memorable argument with him, angering him to invoke the ancient death hiss, an extreme measure when an Aesini wants another one dead.
The Devil's Dragon: Book 1 of the Dragon Trilogy by Jason Boggs takes off with many alien scenarios, fascinating land and space battle scenes, a gamut of emotional events and a plethora of characters, too many to describe in this review of a complex thriller. The author really draws the reader into the very essence of the culture of the aliens, with his profound and searching descriptions of the crisis and its aftermath, as the Ceremonial Journey takes place woefully short of the minimum value of the tithe of gold that is needed to complete the tribute. The flow of the story is continuous and smooth. The cover is attractive. Some descriptive sex makes this unsuitable for readers below age. The many protagonists are original, though to my mind the chief protagonist Nelson sometimes comes across as a weaker person. In contrast, the villainous nature of Ira Bilis certainly evokes strong negative sentiments in a reader. The climax is good and leaves scope for a sequel which should be the case in such an exciting thriller. I rate this with an overall 5 bright stars!
