After being invited to spend Thanksgiving in Miami with her mother and stepfather, Sylvie once again falls prey to her stepbrother Carlos' charms. But a shocking sexual assault leaves her deeply traumatized. When she returns to Boston, Sylvie discovers her face in a deepfake video that reveals the company's financial irregularities. Meanwhile, her burgeoning relationship with her trainer, Rip, becomes complicated. With Carlos stalking her and putting those around her in grave danger, how will Sylvie manage to navigate her personal life and career?
A realistic drama novel with suspense and intrigue, The Deepfake has you engrossed with each page. Joan Cohen weaves in some insightful commentary on the pros and cons of AI technology through an intricately crafted plot that takes you by surprise at every turn. What impressed me the most about this book was how Cohen packed multiple plot threads into the narrative and resolved them satisfyingly while keeping the story immersive and interesting to the reader. The characters feel like real people with distinct motives and agency that shape their personalities. You find yourself cheering for Sylvie as she overcomes one obstacle after another both in her personal and professional life. I enjoyed the book from start to finish and recommend it to readers who love stories with strong women as protagonists.
