The Deadly Art of Deception: Caribou King Mysteries, Book 1 is a murder mystery novel written by Linda Crowder. Caribou King loved her hometown of Coho Bay, Alaska. She was the proud proprietor of The Broken Antler Gallery, a relatively high-end art gallery, and loved working with the visitors who came off the cruise ships during Coho Bay's short season and the native Alaskan artists she represented. Off-season, she happily spent hours immersed in her beloved books. It was nearing the end of the season when she saw Taylor entering her store. The diminutive blonde had been her best friend during the one college year she had spent in Seattle, but the recent tragic history surrounding the death of Johnny, Cara's childhood friend and Taylor's husband, overshadowed all else. Taylor, always an outsider, had left under a cloud fueled by the angry accusations of Johnny's father who had never trusted her. It had been a year since Johnny's bear-battered body was found at the edge of a cliff in bear country, and Cara couldn't figure out what could have prompted her friend's return to Coho Bay.
Linda Crowder's murder mystery novel, The Deadly Art of Deception: Caribou King Mysteries, Book 1, is filled with twists and turns, and even the most dedicated armchair sleuths will have their work cut out for them in figuring out the culprit in this original and entertaining whodunit. I was fascinated by the Coho Bay setting and the lifestyles of the residents whose outside lives seemed intimately linked to the tourist season. While Cara's four hard months of work seemed well rewarded by eight months of reading, those endless dark days are off-putting, to say the least. Cara is an intriguing and well-developed character, as are her sister and brother-in-law and the other townspeople Crowder introduces in this first book of the series. The Deadly Art of Deception is solid mystery material with an engaging main character and a grand puzzler of a plot. It's highly recommended.
