The Daughters of Job by Gardenia Yud is a fictional account of the lives of Job’s daughters. Job’s story is legendary, his life becomes a memorial to humanity. After his tragic losses, God blessed Job with prosperity, grace, and peace. The Almighty establishes an enduring legacy through Job’s family, especially through his beautiful daughters. Job’s daughters are not like other women. Each of his daughters is blessed with a special gift and unique destiny. Jemima, the oldest, is calm, yet courageous. Keziah, the second daughter, is beautiful with a determined, unwavering spirit. The youngest, the energetic Keren-happuch, constantly searches for riches with her exotic blue eyes. These three women are part of an “unusual family, with an infamous story.”
Gardenia Yud pens an insightful story in The Daughters of Job. The Bible states that the Lord blessed the latter days of Job’s life more than his beginning and his daughters were a vital part of God’s continuing blessing. The narrative is fictional; however, it is well versed and researched. The story is built upon this foundational thought: “We’ve all experienced loss. We have to let ourselves feel it and then ask God to help us overcome it.” Gardenia Yud gives life to The Daughters of Job by creating three very different and dynamic female characters. As an heir of Job, each of the women is endowed with a special purpose, and like their father, their destiny is tested through adversity. I really appreciated the concept of this novel and the detailed and imaginative portrayal of the characters. The conclusion of the narrative beautifully sums up the idea that life is rarely as it seems, and often isn’t as we expect. Our individual destinies are more than we can ever hope for and dream of in the hands of Almighty God.
