The Curse of the Warlock is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure subgenres. It is intended for the middle-grade reading audience and was penned by author Jessica Renwick as the fourth installment in the Starfell book series. In this epic sword and sorcery-style adventure series, we find ourselves back with charming central protagonist Fable after she has acquired the legendary Blood Star. But Fable’s magic still isn’t secure enough to connect her to this mighty prize, and there are still plenty of missing people, pets, and entire shops to locate. So when the doors are opened to a new quest and a dangerous dragon, Fable and her friends can only hope that this will lead them to a solution to all their problems.

It is rare that an author can write such a lengthy fantasy book for younger readers and continue to capture their interest through every chapter, but author Jessica Renwick has certainly weaved some magic into these pages! I enjoyed the fact that there was plenty of opening exposition to the world of Endora and Fable’s current situation, so even newcomers to the series can dive right in and enjoy the adventure from the off. The descriptions were also a huge plus, creating easily-imagined fantasy vistas, incredible locations, fearsome creatures, and vivid characters that live in the reader’s mind in their full cinematic glory. When you add to this the fast-paced plot, charming dialogue, and plenty of twisting, turning peril, The Curse of the Warlock becomes a read that every young fantasy fan will be sure to devour.
