I really enjoyed Pixel as a central figure, dipping in and out of the different romances that he has to examine and defend, and serving as our guide to Heaven and its many complications. I thought the execution of the concept worked well with the episodic nature of the plot, and overall this drove the story forward in a highly readable, page-turning fashion with a great pace. Another feature I especially enjoyed was the dialogue, both in the relationships themselves and in Pixel’s commentary on the situation as it gets more and more out of hand. Overall, if you’re looking for something fresh, fun, and original to read in the fantasy subgenre, give The Cupid Chronicles a go.

He is tasked with defending Cupid-1637, Cupid’s assistant, to stop him from being sent below. He has just 24 hours to interview Cupid-1637 and look at the evidence – eight romances he mismanaged – and come up with an appropriate defense. Things are never quite that simple though, and Pixel has his suspicions that this is all just a ruse, that someone higher up is playing with things to ensure Cupid-1637 goes down. And once he works out who, the truth has the potential to turn heaven upside down.

The Cupid Chronicles by Dennis Copelan is a humorous part fantasy part sci-fi tale with an original plot. As well as the main storyline, there are no less than eight mini-stories, funny, heart-wrenching at times, but all part of the main plot. The descriptive nature of this book places you right in the story with the characters, all of whom are original and well-developed to the extent that you really get to know them. The mini-stories transport you to different times and places and offer a great insight into the main characters, fleshing out their background stories and lending depth to the plot. There is plenty of action, lots of thrills, and suspense as Pixel closes in on the truth and tries to save heaven and Cupid-1637. An excellent story, great for those who want a little time away from the realities of life.

All he has to do now is to prove that to the miserable threesome with their own agendas who are presiding over the hearings. Who’d have thought heaven would still have such self-serving creatures in power? But after all, they were all once earthlings, right? And sometimes it takes more than a lifetime to change bad habits.

Together with Pixel, readers are invited to study the cases--in fact, a series of delightful short stories--to see if there’s any way to save Cupid-1637 from being flushed. Remember Aladdin’s lamp? Penny, who’s wishing for a better life rubs a lamp, brings forth a genie of sorts and wishes she hadn’t. Kirby Briggs, hopelessly attracted to Maxine, tries a love potion with some dramatic results. Most folks know how business issues can tear good friends apart, so poor Cupid-1637 has his hands full trying to keep their respective children in love with each other when their parents are fighting. In The Cupid Chronicles, Copelan explores humanity’s needs, desires, fumbles, and foibles through a most entertaining, often hilariously amusing collection of short stories nurtured in the bosom of one larger story. Copelan’s style is excellent and his story-telling skills inspiring. In the end, The Cupid Chronicles is one big fairy tale with a moral to share and it’s all very delightful. Lack of training is one explanation, but can Pixel find the clue that ties all these problems together?

The Cupid Chronicles is a superbly written novel that leaves you astonished by the twists in finding love and the multiple turns in the plot. Dennis Copelan takes you outside every thought you had about the responsibilities Cupids would perform. Each attempt Dean makes in love matches comes from his heart, and the stories escalate in their textured characters and humorous resolutions. The heavenly scene runs similar to earth, except angels and angels-in-training can be flushed or removed. The story unfolds in a dramatic way which makes the reader satisfied with the outcome and feel fulfilled that heaven has made the right decision. This romantic fantasy kept me glued to the pages as the characters took command of unfortunate love problems and ruled their situation.
