The Crossover Mystery by Ronald A Feldman is a perfect mix of adventure and unsolved mysteries. The story starts off with a strange ceremony performed over the body of a man named John W. Wiley in order to prepare him for what is referred to as the Crossover. Readers then shift to David Flanders, a young teenager who is on vacation with his parents at their cottage along the Long Island Sound. There he meets Jessie Nordvig, who lives on the eastern end of the beach, and the two quickly become good friends. One day David and Jessie spot a neighbor by the name of Old Jimmy dumping a corpse into the water and the two begin their investigation into who it could be and what happened to them. David and Jessie discover Old Jimmy’s record book filled with the names of sailors, including that of John W. Wiley.
I love mysteries and I absolutely loved reading this one. Although this story is geared towards young adults, readers across the board will be enthralled and entranced by The Crossover Mystery. The atmosphere of the Long Island Sound with its fog, rain, and the ebb and flow of the tide easily lends itself to the mysteries of the plot. Feldman creates a dynamic world within the pages of the book for readers to quickly and easily fall into. You will find yourself hooked from the first page, with dense and detailed descriptions of people and places that make it feel as though you are right there alongside David and Jessie as they try to uncover the secrets behind Old Jimmy’s nighttime activities. A wonderful story! I appreciate how the author left it a little open ended for the reader to put together the pieces on their own.
