The Covenant and Other Stories is a collection of literary tales by author J.W. Clark. Throughout these eight stories, Clark discusses what happens when human beings are pushed to their emotional limits as characters search desperately for some semblance of meaning in their lives. There’s an argument about whether the situations they find themselves in are of their own making because of the decisions they make, or choose not to make, and there are also many other familiar questions about the price of sacrifice and how the human mind carries on despite facing some of the most terrifyingly dark emotions it can ever come across.
The heavy literary style of writing that J.W. Clark employs will definitely make these stories an acquired taste, but for those who love to pause over deeply considered prose and philosophical moments before returning to the action, The Covenant and Other Stories will prove to be a very rewarding read. I enjoyed Daydreamers the best, perhaps because the action moved most quickly there and it had some genuinely frightening moments. What I can say for every single story in this collection is that they certainly keep you thinking things over long after you’ve put the book down. Clark delivers what he promises in a carefully considered collection of character profiles which run the gamut of human emotions, bringing to life dilemmas and situations which are familiar to all in terms of emotion if not always experience. Overall, The Covenant and Other Stories is certain to be an excellent read for literary fans looking for something new.
