Teach children about colorblindness, or monochromacy, with The Colourblind Kid by Tom Powell. Tim is excited about his first day of school. On his way, he points out the colors of his bag, his teacher’s clothing, and the world around him—non-colorblind readers will notice that his descriptions do not seem right. Once in school, Tim struggles to pick the correct chair that his teacher assigns and draws a picture that receives criticism from the other children. Frustrated, Tim bursts into tears and exclaims that he cannot see colors. Luckily, his teacher, Miss Taylor, experiences monochromacy herself and knows what to do. She explains to the class what monochromacy is and shares that it is okay for Tim to see the world exactly the way that he does. The book, written in rhyme, concludes with statistics about how common monochromacy is, along with more information on the condition.
The Colourblind Kid is a fantastic way for colorblind children to see their experience in a story, and for others to gain a deeper grasp of another experience of the world. Tom Powell paints Tim’s world as Tim sees it, with pink trees, a purple sky, and a chocolate-brown car that was intended to be red. This helped me have a better understanding of how my colorblind loved ones see things. I appreciate that the story acknowledges the challenges that can come with monochromacy, including misunderstandings, bullying, and deep frustrations. The story’s conclusion, as well as the educational information, will help readers learn more about monochromacy in a gentle and accessible way. A perfect book for beginner readers to tackle on their own, and a perfect book to add to a group story time to help more little ones gain a bigger image of the world!
