The Clock in the Water by Crissi McDonald blends the ordinary with the extraordinary, crafting a narrative rich in emotional depth and magical realism. Set against the backdrop of Osprey Bay and Camas Island, the story follows Nolee and Keet, whose reunion dredges up unresolved feelings and secrets buried deep within their shared history. Nolee has carefully built a peaceful life for herself in Osprey Bay, but the return of Keet, her former flame, shatters the delicate balance she has maintained. As they grapple with the complexities of their past relationship and the betrayal that once tore them apart, mysterious forces begin to stir. The arrival of an enigmatic family adds layers of intrigue, unraveling a web of secrets that threaten to disrupt their peaceful existence.
The Clock in the Water is the second in a series. I didn’t read the first book, yet I didn’t feel lost. Crissi McDonald writes skillfully so readers can enjoy book two without reading book one, but this novel has piqued my curiosity, so I’m sure to read the first. McDonald weaves elements of magical realism into the narrative, and the island setting almost becomes a character itself with its atmospheric beauty and hidden depths reflecting the characters' emotional landscapes. Through vivid prose and imagery, McDonald transports the reader into a world where reality and enchantment merge seamlessly. I loved the incorporation of orcas into the storyline; they could almost be supporting characters. Readers who enjoy lyrical prose won't want to miss The Clock in the Water.
