The Clay Endures, Book Two is written by Sharon K. Miller. Despite the angst of his family on hearing he wants to marry a Mexican Indian, Armando weds his beautiful Esperanza, and travels far away beyond Tucson, away from family and everything familiar to build a life together. Dealing with continual Apache raids and unwelcome visits from despicable characters, the young couple braves many hostilities and challenges. The only comfort Esperanza receives comes from a spirit that only she can hear. It comforted her from the very first time she touched the clay pot, which she found on the land. In addition to all else, she has to face an Apache who seems to stalk her every move. Quite a daunting occurrence each time her husband is absent. Armando eventually realizes he has caused great suffering to his beloved wife in trying to realize his dream. He determines to remedy the situation. His hope is that he has not left it too late.
This is a beautiful story and a great read. I loved the descriptions of the spectacular Arizona landscapes, the traditions and expectations of the Indians and new settlers too. It is hard to comprehend the bravery and the stalwart natures of the early pioneers and new settlers when their lives were in such danger from so many sources. Sharon Miller’s research is apparent as she weaves a magnetic tale of love, survival, and courage. Despite their hardships, the couple never loses sight of their deepest love for each other. Highly recommended. Some graphic sexual content. A wonderful story, with colorful, engaging characters.
