Perhaps a bit more true for any book categorized as a mystery/suspense/thriller, the overused reviewer’s phrase, “It’s a page-turner!” ought to be more than just a minimum expectation. Jeff Turner’s novel The Choices He Made is accurately tagged as a mystery/suspense/thriller, and it is foremost a genuine page-turner. Due to some skilled and artful plotting, the reader finds himself easily engaged by several sympathetic characters (including a central figure flawed to the point of questionable morality), who become involved in a series of dramatic, exciting, often violent confrontations. This novel is, at heart, a tale of extended vigilante justice done by the proverbial “knight-on-a-white-horse.” More accurately, this is a tale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian told for the twenty-first century.
Beau Clayton is Jeff Turner’s stand-in for old forest thief in this fast-moving, highly entertaining thriller: The Choices He Made. But don’t let the comparison mislead you. This white knight has a morality all his own, one easy to rationalize and even to appreciate, but nonetheless born of the darker grayness between white and black. When Beau enters the scene just in time to witness his brother’s death while coming to the aid of a compassionate woman guarding a fleeing child, all the elements for a vengeful mission including maiden-saving and child-protecting are quickly yet skillfully put into place. After that, the reader can simply sit back and enjoy the somewhat guilty but deeply felt pleasure of watching everyone get exactly what they deserve, making this a mystery/suspense/thriller well worth its due.
