Accompanied by interesting drawings, this story is told simply with lots of excitement as the plot thickens. The author draws the reader in with his luscious descriptions of the chocolate clouds and the chocolate foods, even a breakfast totally chocolatified. The protagonist, ten-year-old Henry, is well developed as a caring, overweight child who wants to be noticed, especially by his mother. Good descriptive narrative and effective scene development help move this story forward. His journey to find the missing (perhaps even stolen) chocolate clouds is a coming-of-age type of journey that helps the young boy see himself in a different light as he explores new eating options. Combined with considerable exercise as he hikes across one kingdom after another, a diet and daily regimen give him a healthier lifestyle, one that makes him feel more self-confident and, yes, healthier. This is a fun story, full of good lessons.

While searching for his family treasure, Henry would visit the kingdoms he had only read about, including the dangerous Barebone Island. Marc Remus wrote an excellent story in The Chocolate Clouds for children between six and ten years. Real people inspired this book, but it featured dreamy fabled settings. I wished to visit Veggington and cross the Omelet Ocean. The Chocolate Clouds was a hilarious, captivating, relatable, and educative work. Marc showed me (and children) healthy eating habits and lifestyles without eliminating the sweets. I also learned not to judge people until I had honest encounters with them because my belief could be wrong. Henry and the flowers’ experience showed how people get lured by their desires, so discipline and focus are essential traits. I loved Carrotina, Tiger, Milo, and the bookmark crochet tutorial by Catharina. The shaded illustrations by the author were also beautiful. I’d love to read more from Marc.

The first thing I noticed about this book was its precious collection of eye-catching illustrations. Drawn by Remus himself, these black and white illustrations were inarguably the book’s best asset, even rivaling the storyline at times. Remus cleverly hid many details in the pictures and depicted Henry’s gradual transformation through them. I found Henry’s bravery and resolve admirable. His encounters with various fascinating characters throughout Foodtopia made his journey remarkable. I loved how Remus discussed obesity and its ill effects on health while refraining from defaming comments. The story served as an ingenious way to introduce nutritious food options such as vegetables, fruits, and dairy products. Remus presented some valuable lessons about healthy eating in the guise of exciting adventures. A humorous interview from Carrotina and several fun activities at the end of the book would captivate youngsters. The Chocolate Clouds is a perfect read for children aged 6-10 years.
