The Chieftain: Highland Heroes Prequel by Maeve Greyson is a beautiful story about a mercenary on the run and a woman who would do anything to protect her clan. Alexander MacCoinnich along with his remaining clansmen became swords for hire. Severely wounded, he collapses in front of Catriona Neal, the woman who called him back from death’s door. Feelings start to blossom, but with the memory of the massacre at Glencoe still fresh in the highlands, their budding romance comes to an end with the news of Catriona’s upcoming nuptials.
The Chieftain by Maeve Greyson is a classic friends-to-lovers or even a love-at-first-sight theme, and describes the sizzling heat between Alexander and Catriona! She fell for Alexander first, as any hot-blooded female would. He was everything any woman could want - tall, dark, handsome, and with brains to boot! She felt that he would only grow to resent her later. One of my favorite developments is the growth in Catriona. When readers first meet her, she was already a headstrong and independent woman although she lacked confidence. It was only after meeting Alexander that she found strength. I’m not saying that women should rely on men to be confident, but rather find that one person who’ll be their rock through thick and thin. With the right person behind them, nothing can stop them. It was nice seeing the romance bloom, and while slow at times, the rest of the story continued at a steady pace and concluded on a happy note, with more to come!
