The Cerebranauts: In Search of the Human Experience is a work of fiction in the science fiction and psychological sub-genres which was penned by author Seth Sherman. The plot follows Lizzie Sayler, a young doctor whose expertise in the field of brain mapping affords her an incredible yet daunting opportunity. As a cerebranaut, Lizzie can enter the brains of others and explore their thoughts, and in doing so she is recruited by the government to recover a highly important computer system. But Lizzie is not the only one looking for answers, and as psychological demons and foreign agents encroach on her mission, Lizzie’s safety and sanity are at stake.
Author Seth Sherman has put a great deal of work into this superb and layered narrative, which takes many elements from the real science of how the brain works and interweaves them with an intelligent and personal story. The development around protagonist Lizzie Sayler is done with great attention to detail; her brilliant mind utilized well to solve issues and give us, the reader, essential exposition on brain function without it feeling too heavy or labored. The action is well-paced to deliver different excursions and emotional peaks and troughs, which keeps the plot interesting and changes the mood of the piece often. What results is a highly engaging read that is clearly crafted by knowledgeable storytelling. Overall, I would certainly recommend The Cerebranauts: In Search of the Human Experience to science fiction fans seeking an intelligent read with a compelling storytelling style.
