The Cautious Siege: A Novel of the American Revolution by S.D. Banks is a historical novel set against the backdrop of the Siege of Boston in 1775. It tells the story of a burgeoning romance, born of friendship, between rebel soldier Daniel Garrett and Anna Somerset, a woman trapped amongst the Loyalists within the siege walls. Life is hard in a city crammed full of people, many of whom had retreated to Boston to gain protection from the British. Overrun by crime and smallpox, there is very little food or fuel and prices are high. Daniel tries to ensure that Anna and his mother are supplied with enough to eat but it proves a dangerous task. Life takes a turn for the worse when Anna is badly betrayed by someone living in her own household.
S.D. Banks writes a warm and well-crafted historical drama based on true events. Peppered with subtle speech and mannerisms of the day, this novel perfectly captures the atmosphere of the time. I was impressed with the details of the siege including the descriptions of the movement and the use of heavy weaponry which had such a devastating effect on the city. The complexities of the war combined with the strong characters, including an archetypal villain, provide a thoroughly satisfying and absorbing tale. I could not help but admire the feisty Anna and the courageous Daniel. Their tentative attraction, arising from a long friendship, develops into a passion which neither can ignore. Romance, adventure, heroism and villainy, The Cautious Siege has it all and in abundance. Those who love romantic historical fiction will enjoy this book.
